"Pleasant"ville

*Kriss Lehmann reviews her past posts*

Ahhhhhh, Pleasantville. When I finally took over the group and land of 'Tashi, I played around for a while with a few different ideas. First came the cute little stream, rocks, trees that would compliment the very modern, white plaster, natural wood and glass of my gallery. As things were slowing down after my gallery opening, I began to travel around, sightseeing SL, and revisiting some of the locations that I had been for photo shoots. One place that really stood out was Dark City, the first one... I had used the location for a couple different pictures:

I immediately fell in love with the city, and before too long, I was drawn in by the siren call of dirty brick, rusted metal and broken glass...

First to go was the gallery. In it's place loomed a broken, hollowed husk of an old metals foundry, a heavy crucible having fallen to its new home in the basement (now flooded with sewage runnoff, taking parts of several floors with it. The pictures from the old (yet newer) gallery were rehung on chainlink fence, or propped against shipping crates.

Cracked asphalt began spreading from the foundry/gallery, its broken surface giving a chance to the occasional grass or dirt mound.

Around this time, I was hanging out a lot with Jezebelle and her boi-toy, Ashe. They were renting a plot on a privately owned sim, but the owners kept increasing regulations... first on where they could build (Jez was also very much into the urban decay look, and was forced to put her home in the sky above cloud level), and then how many people they could have visiting at a time. That's no way to enjoy SL, so I quickly invited Jez and Ashe to come and live on my land. Jez brought a new life to the build and (until I completely waived it) a little rent money.

With Jez around, the city began to form in earnest, and every day new features were added, tweaked, removed, remade. I ironically referred to the area as Pleasantville, and the name stuck. I think the build started sometime in February, and almost 3 months later, has only just now started to slow, as prims are slowly running out. I'm trying to give us enough room so that we can continue our first passion (building) in the relative peace that Pleasantville provides, but our ideas still far outweigh my current prim limit, and I'm now trying to raise money for a Sim. If you find yourself in the area of Solbim (southern continent), please stop by and visit Pleasantville. If you like what we are doing, please help us out by donating to the tip cup near the kitty at the TP point.

More for myself....

This is more for myself, so I can track them back later, but I wanted to share a couple articles that I was included it... ok, one article, and one interview.

The interview was with Dale Innis on behalf of the Virtual Artists Alliance. This was the second piece I had participated in (at least to my knowledge). The first was this article written by Cheri Horton, the creator of PixelPulse Magazine. I was very honored in both cases, and they make me proud to share my work with the SL community.

Super Grid-down happy blogtime!

Yea! On vacation, but put off a day with car troubles, I take advantage of SL's downed grid and RL's downed vehicles to update the blog! I promised to tell you about two of my best friends in SL, Jezebella Electricteeth and October Hush.

I met Jez through Flickr, while I was looking for more people to photograph. She has such a unique style and personality, and I think I fell in love with instantly. Besides being a total hottie, she is a very inventive and detailed builder. Her design style and tastes perfectly reflect mine, and it was not a tough decision, when her rented land began issuing more and more restrictions, to invite her and her friends to stay with me, where what soon would be called "Pleasantville" was being planned.

I met Tobie through Jez. She is an extremely friendly, talented person. Her avatar style was rather unique as well, with these large doll-like eyes and simple, porcelain style skin. Her friendly and curious demeanor endeared her to me rather quickly. Tobie and I became fast friends and for a couple months, there was hardly a time where we were not hanging out together.

Ahhhhhh! Looks like the grid is back up. I've converted my studio space into a build shop for my new store, something I call "Good Kitty, Bad Kitty". Prims must be rezed for the opening!

...and so it begins

I washed up upon the newbie shores of Second Life's Orientation Island on December 7th, 2006.

Eager to add to the already cacophonous voices of content within the Metaverse, I became a "sandbox rat", journeying out into the various free-to-build simulators (sims) and open lots to build, script, and laugh my time away.

After a couple weeks, I ran across the extremely accomplished builder, Tiridates. He introduced me to some people at Dogfight Atoll, and I was granted space to build my first home, Salvage. Salvage was a rusty military style quonset hut, attached to a long pier. She floated approximately 500 meters off the ground, aided by two steam filled tanks, a boiler, and a stripped down Heimbach power generator. I was adopted into the local pirate aviation group, and began to work on Vanships, a type of flying craft in the anime series "Last Exile".

Not content with only working on aircraft (and honestly, not exactly proficient at physical flying scripts), I began to spend time working on other items, basic prim clothing accessories, more and more involved scripting, and photography.

By default, I'm very detail oriented, at least when it comes to work I produce, and I was VERY unhappy with the quality of raw snapshots taken with the Second Life (SL) client. I began to post-produce my pictures, first just cleaning up obvious avatar mesh deformations or adding slight shadows. The more I worked at it, the more I began to tweak, until apparently I really polished up a style, and people began asking me what program using to render the images. HA! It's all SL, but with a heavy Photoshop hand.

I began posting my pictures on Flickr and began to get quite a bit of attention from my work. Because of the subject matter of some of my pictures, however, I was soon forced to make some pictures private. That defeated the purpose of making the pictures in the first place, so I began to search out for a bit of virtual land in SL to set up a personal gallery of sorts.

"Land" in SL is divided into 2 main categories: "PG" and "Mature". These categories are for the type of content that SL users can publicly show. Since my work DID involve nudes, I searched for Mature land, preferably non-covenant Mainland.

I eventually landed in Solbim, a sim on the second Mainland continent. A user by the name of Matashi was opening up his land to rental properties, and I was fortunate enough to be his first client. Not entirely awash in Lindens (the SL currency), but with payment info on file, I was allowed to start building a public gallery for my artwork on speculation; I would sell my work, and Matashi would get a small commission for rent.

My official gallery opening in mid-January was a huge success! Linden Lab employee John Lester ( a.k.a. "Pathfinder Linden" ) was in attendance, as well as models from my shoots, some of the best (in my opinion) SL photographers, and many supporters from Flickr.

I wasn't actually selling pictures at the time, and I was never actually asked to pay rent. Matashi was on the way out of SL, and after a while, I was granted ALL his land in Solbim. It was a hugely emotional time, as I was just so thankful and excited. Two months in SL, and I now had almost a quarter of a sim. After the initial glowy glowy, though, I realized my monthly fee in SL had also grown. Yeeeesh.

Well, this will have to be all for now. Next time, I'll introduce a couple very dear friends, and explain how a pretty little white concrete gallery turned into an urban wasteland called Pleasantville.
